On Thursday morning, the Heraklion Single-Member Court of First Instance issued a temporary decision, following a prosecutor’s intervention, removing parental custody of 3-year-old Angelos from his 26-year-old mother and granting it to his grandmother.
This decision is provisional, as a final ruling will be made on February 19, when the case will be examined by the Heraklion Single-Member Misdemeanor Court as part of voluntary jurisdiction proceedings, according to ERT.
The Child Continues to Fight for His Life
The case has shocked all of Greece, as 3-year-old Angelos remains in critical condition at PAGNI Hospital after reportedly suffering horrific abuse at the hands of his mother and her 44-year-old partner.
Speaking to Neakriti.gr, the hospital’s director, Giorgos Chalkiadakis, stated that the child underwent major surgery to treat a large subdural hematoma on the left side of his brain, which also required a craniectomy.
“The child is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, with his condition remaining critical but stable. His circulatory, respiratory, and urinary systems are functioning satisfactorily, but his brain is experiencing increased intracranial pressure, which has not subsided despite medication,” said Chalkiadakis.
With 35 years of medical experience, Chalkiadakis admitted he had never seen such extensive abuse in a child so young.
Hospital doctors are following specialized medical protocols to determine the next steps in his treatment. “Starting tomorrow, a more intensive evaluation process will begin based on further tests. The child’s condition remains unpredictable, but as we say in medicine, ‘Dum spiro spero – As long as I breathe, I hope.’ We sincerely hope little Angelos will be the exception,” the hospital director emphasized.
From the very first day of his hospitalization, the boy’s grandmother has been by his side, staying at the hospital and receiving constant updates on his condition.
