Chilean tourists ignore police tape to reach their airbnb on the cliffs of Oia

“I heard about the earthquakes when we landed, but we’re not worried,” says Rodrigo with a laugh – Chile sits on the 'Ring of Fire' and frequently experiences strong quakes

On the edge of Oia’s dramatic cliffs, where the Aegean stretches like an endless blue canvas, Rodrigo and Leslie from Chile enjoyed a glass of wine. Seated at a small table, their glasses shimmering in the sunset, they appeared perfectly at ease—despite the fact that just a few meters away, Santorini’s steep rock face plunged abruptly into the sea.

They had only been on the island for two days, but nothing seemed to faze them—not even the recent seismic activity that had unsettled other visitors. “We booked our trip to Santorini two months ago and chose to stay in Oia. I only found out about the earthquakes when we landed, but we’re not worried,” Rodrigo said with a grin, raising his glass.

Ignoring the Warnings

What’s even more surprising is that the couple had no hesitation in disregarding official warnings. Despite police tape marking restricted areas along the caldera due to landslide risks, the two Chileans walked right through—determined to enjoy their wine with Santorini’s most breathtaking view.

“In Chile, we have 5.0 earthquakes every week”

Chile, located on the infamous “Ring of Fire,” is no stranger to powerful earthquakes. Its residents have adapted to life with constant tremors and rely on their country’s earthquake-resistant architecture.

“We experience 5.0 magnitude quakes almost every week. We only start worrying when it reaches 6.0. But in Chile, we’re not afraid because our buildings are strong. Here, though… I’m not so sure,” Rodrigo adds with a knowing smile.

Unshaken by Nature’s Threats

Their serene presence contrasted sharply with the dramatic landscape surrounding them—the sheer drop below their feet, the feeling of vast emptiness, and the awareness that Santorini’s ground could shake at any moment added a thrill of danger to their seemingly carefree moment.

While some Japanese tourists had reportedly left Santorini in a hurry due to the seismic activity, Rodrigo and Leslie appeared unfazed. Accustomed to tremors, they preferred to focus on the island’s beauty rather than its potential risks.
