ND: Yes to the preliminary inquiry on Tempi – We will expose PASOK’s exploitation of the tragedy

"We have nothing to hide or fear – Our decision does not mean we align with the content of the proposal," say parliamentary sources from New Democracy

Newsroom February 6 07:35

New Democracy has said “yes” to PASOK’s proposal for the establishment of a Preliminary Inquiry Committee on Christos Triantopoulos, according to parliamentary sources from the ruling party. This decision came shortly after the official submission of the proposal in Parliament by the opposition party.

PASOK, in its proposal for a Preliminary Inquiry against Triantopoulos (currently Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection), claims that there are “sufficient indications” against the former Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister for “breach of duty.”

The Minister of State, Makis Voridis, had already hinted at New Democracy’s support earlier in Parliament.

Government parliamentary sources, while clarifying that ND will vote in favor of the proposal, stress that this does not mean they endorse its content. They outline five key points:

  1. Committed to uncovering the truth, and with nothing to fear or conceal, we support the establishment of a Preliminary Inquiry Committee. This is tangible proof that we will not tolerate PASOK’s slanderous claims of an alleged ‘cover-up.’
  2. This does not, in any way, mean that we agree with the content of the proposal. It is clear that PASOK’s move is nothing more than a desperate attempt to exploit the Tempi tragedy for cheap political games.
  3. Today, we ‘learned’ from PASOK’s proposal that the so-called ‘cover-up’ by Triantopoulos is based on neither testimony nor orders nor any other solid evidence, but rather on his mere participation in an ‘informal meeting’ and his provision of ‘moral support’ to relevant officials.
  4. PASOK’s rush to submit this proposal reveals that its leadership is not truly interested in seeking the truth or ensuring justice but is instead caught up in an internal competition within the opposition to see who can outmaneuver whom.
  5. PASOK’s accusations of an alleged cover-up of supplementary case file materials by the former Speaker of Parliament have been utterly disproven. Even SYRIZA MPs, such as Olga Gerovasili and Vassilis Kokkalis, have confirmed that they had access to all additional evidence. And yet, instead of admitting its own negligence, PASOK chose to launch a vicious attack against the former Speaker with baseless claims.
  6. Everything will come to light – the truth will shine in Parliament. At the same time, PASOK’s scheme to politically exploit the tragedy, along with its allies, will be fully exposed.
