Kostis Hatzidakis: The EBRD, much like PPC and EFKA, plays a crucial role

Over the past year there have been legislative interventions that increase the flexibility and speed of the EBRD, the Minister of National Economy and Finance said in a post

Newsroom February 13 05:19

The government is aiming for the promotion of public property “away from bureaucratic methods, in a modern spirit and with the utilisation, where necessary, of properties in packages and with special purpose companies”.

In a post, the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis promotes the changes in the model of the Public Real Estate Company and cites the first results they have brought about in the utilization of public property, with “emblematic” actions such as the development of the Thessaloniki Governorate, the reconstruction of Achilleio in Corfu, the upgrading of the Caves of Diros, the upgrading of the Parnassos Ski Centre and others.

In his post, Kostis Hatzidakis, who met with the managing director of the EBRD, Iro Hatzigeorgiou, says the following:

“What does the Public Real Estate Company (ETAD) have in common with Olympic, PPC, and EFKA? It is a company with too many problems, but we have started to address them, with modern means and a spirit of common sense!

This is evidenced by the figures published for the company’s activity in 2024. There was a dynamic relaunch with 5 flagship projects. More specifically, they have launched: The development of the Thessaloniki Governor’s House, the reconstruction of Achilleio in Corfu, the upgrading of the Caves of Diros, the upgrading of the Parnassos Ski Centre, the inclusion of Tae Kwon Do in the plan for the overall redevelopment of the Falirikos Ormos, in collaboration with the Region of Attica. Some of these even posed serious problems for local communities and public property! The re-launch of the EBRD is also reflected in the financial data, as an increase in operating income is recorded, among other things. It is not only these projects, of course, that the EBRD is dealing with. There are other open problems or legacies from the past for which solutions are being worked on in one way or another.

This past year there have been legislative interventions that increase the flexibility and speed of the EBRD. Without forgetting individual local issues, we are focusing on the big open problems. And we will concentrate on making public assets available, away from bureaucratic methods, in a modern spirit, and, where necessary, by utilizing properties in packages and with special purpose vehicles to speed up the relevant procedures. The road is uphill. But steps forward are already being taken!” concludes his post.
