A significant weather change is set to affect Greece from Wednesday, February 19, as cold air masses move across the country, causing a sharp drop in temperatures by 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. This intense cold front, named Coral, will persist until next Monday, bringing freezing conditions, particularly to the central and northern regions.
Snowfall and Rain Across Greece:
On Wednesday, the weather will deteriorate rapidly across the eastern, southern mainland, and the Aegean, where increasing clouds and local rain will occur. Snowfall will begin in the morning in Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, and the northeastern Aegean Islands, initially affecting the mountains and semi-mountains, and then gradually spreading to lower altitudes.
In the northeastern mainland, the snow will gradually ease by evening. From midday onwards, snowfall will occur in central and eastern Sterea, Euboea, and the eastern Peloponnese, also affecting the mountains of Crete by evening.
Temperature Drop and Regional Variations:
Temperatures will drop nationwide, with the central and northern regions feeling the most significant chill. In Macedonia, Thrace, and the northeastern Aegean Islands, temperatures will range from -3°C to 7-8°C, with Thessaly seeing temperatures as high as 9°C in some areas.
In central and eastern Sterea, Evia, and the eastern Peloponnese, temperatures will range from 1°C to 10-12°C, with some places in the eastern Peloponnese reaching up to 13°C.
In the west and the rest of the island regions, temperatures will range from 8°C to 16°C. However, frost will develop in some areas in the central and northern mainland, particularly during the evening and early morning hours.
Looking Ahead:
As the Coral cold wave takes hold, conditions will continue to worsen through the week, with snow, rain, and plummeting temperatures spreading across the country. The cooler air masses, visible in the latest meteorological video, will dominate at about 1500 meters above sea level, bringing freezing temperatures and affecting large parts of Greece. Stay prepared as these cold conditions will last through the weekend, bringing a sharp contrast to the mild weather of previous days.
