Molotov, fires, and tear gas in Syntagma after the rally for Tempi – Watch live footage

Rallies are being held in various regions today for the Tempi accident and the 57 people who lost their lives

Newsroom March 5 07:07

New protests in support of Tempi across Greece. In Athens, the demonstrations are at Syntagma at 19:00, while rallies are planned at the same time in Thessaloniki, at the Venizelos Statue, in Patras, at Georgiou Square, and in Larissa, at the city’s central square.

The cleaning crews of the Municipality of Athens have started clearing the lower side of Syntagma Square. The road outside the Parliament remains closed, with some protesters still present at the site.

Protests continue in Syntagma.

Many detained in Thessaloniki – hooded individuals and the police in the area around the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH).

Two hours of episodes in Syntagma

First aid has been administered to six protesters by EKAB paramedics in the Syntagma area. Additionally, two injured individuals have been transferred to the Red Cross.

According to reports, a police officer is being transferred from Parliament to the 401 Military Hospital by ambulance.

Voridis-Konstantopoulou Clash in Parliament
The president of Plefsi Eleftherias accused the government of being represented by a junta supporter. “I do not seek legitimacy from those who admire Stalin,” responded the Minister of State. Read more.

EKAB has transported two protesters experiencing shortness of breath and panic attacks. One has also suffered a lower limb injury. They are being taken to the Red Cross hospital.

Parliament debate over the riots
The widespread clashes in Syntagma Square, where a group of hooded individuals attacked police forces with stones, Molotov cocktails, and flares, sparked a new political confrontation between the government majority and the opposition in Parliament. Zoe Konstantopoulou (Plefsi Eleftherias), Nikos Pappas (SYRIZA), and Thanasis Pafilis (KKE) accused the government of using excessive force against peaceful protesters. In response, New Democracy parliamentary representative Thanos Plevris questioned whether those throwing Molotovs could be considered peaceful. “The parties that have promoted the idea of a delegitimized government are now rushing to support what is happening outside with the Molotovs. I understand that for the Left, normality is something they do not desire. The citizens who protested had every right to express their views, but among them were individuals who sought violence. The government will not allow this. We will not go back ten years,” he stated. PASOK’s parliamentary representative, Pavlos Geroulanos, also intervened, suggesting that the Molotovs appeared precisely when the government realized the protests were causing political trouble. “What do you mean? That the Molotovs are planted by someone else? That we are responsible? Who is PASOK siding with? Are you defending these people? We have mourned victims from Molotov attacks,” Plevris responded.

Protesters return outside Parliament
With the tear gas and clashes subsiding in the past few minutes, some protesters have returned outside Parliament.

The hooded individuals appear to be heading towards Omonia and Exarchia, with police forces following them, according to ERT.

“Clashes erupted in Athens on Wednesday between Greek police and protesters demonstrating against the 2023 train crash that claimed the lives of 57 people, most of them students, in the country’s worst railway tragedy,” reports Reuters.

“The violent incidents broke out after thousands of people had peacefully gathered outside parliament, where lawmakers were debating a no-confidence motion filed by opposition parties against the government. Earlier, protesters released lanterns into the air and observed a minute of silence to honor the victims. Candles on the ground formed the number ’57.'”

An injured young protester was taken by ambulance.

For nearly an hour, clashes between protesters and riot police (MAT) have been raging around Syntagma Square.

According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), a group of individuals on Mitropoleos Street, in Syntagma Square, threw Molotov cocktails and set fire to three rubbish bins.
