Whales protect diver from white-tipped shark attack in Mauritius – Watch video

The 45-ton sperm whales forced the shark to retreat back into the ocean

Newsroom March 18 02:28

A once-in-a-lifetime experience unfolded for artist Benoît Girodeau during a dive in Mauritius, when two massive whales appeared to protect him just as a shark moved towards him in a threatening manner.

In a video posted on Instagram, Girodeau captured the incredible moment when two sperm whales, each weighing around 45 tons, initially blocked the shark’s path before chasing it away, ultimately forcing it to flee.

In an astonishing act of defense, one of the whales even bit the shark’s tail, making its intentions crystal clear and compelling the apex predator to retreat back into the depths of the ocean.

The species of shark that approached Girodeau is known to be among the most dangerous, with recorded incidents of attacks on humans.
