Lights went out at buildings and monuments across Athens, including the Acropolis and the City Hall, to honor Earth Hour.

The Municipality of Athens participated by switching off lights at City Hall in Kotzia Square, the Liosion and Patision street municipal buildings, Technopolis, the Kypseli Municipal Market, Maria Callas Museum, and the Athens Solidarity Center of the City’s Reception and Solidarity Centre.

“Earth Hour today, and at 20:30 we turn off lights in municipal buildings, contributing to the effort to reduce pollution, to make our planet greener, and to tackle climate change issues,” stated Athens Mayor Haris Doukas shortly before the blackout.

Many people, including numerous young Athenians, gathered at Philopappos Hill and Lycabettus to watch the lights go out.

The Earth Hour movement is a global initiative launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007, aiming to raise awareness about environmental issues and climate change.
