Internal discontent in PASOK: The referral of Batzeli and Doukas’ concerns over “selective” responses

PASOK appears to be entering a new phase of internal debate following the decision to refer Central Political Committee member Katerina Batzeli to the Ethics Committee. The decision comes after her public disagreement with the tone of Nikos Androulakis' response to SYRIZA MP Nikos Pappas

Newsroom March 29 06:15

Shortly after the announcement by the president of PASOK’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee (EDEKAP), Athens Mayor and Political Center member Haris Doukas expressed concerns through sources close to him, suggesting that Androulakis’ reaction to Batzeli’s remarks was “selective.”

Sources from Doukas’ camp noted that no official response was given to statements from:

  • Parliamentary Representative Pavlos Geroulanos, who spoke about potential PASOK cooperation with Zoe Konstantopoulou and Yanis Varoufakis.
  • Parliamentary Group Secretary Dimitris Biagkis, who referred to discussions of elections as “ridiculous.”
  • Political Planning official Anna Diamantopoulou, who described gatherings for the Tempi tragedy as a “memorial service.”
  • Political Center member Thanasis Glavinas, who called PASOK’s co-signing of the motion of no confidence alongside Konstantopoulou a “mistake.”

The same sources argue that the application of different standards raises concerns about fairness, as the party leadership’s strict response was directed at a Central Political Committee member rather than a Member of Parliament or other senior figures.

The Reason Behind Batzeli’s Referral

A few days ago, Batzeli criticized PASOK’s response to Nikos Pappas, stating that the party was engaging in unnecessary political toxicity. She argued that while certain remarks about Androulakis were inappropriate, PASOK, as an institutional and serious party, should not resort to rhetoric that could be perceived as excessively combative.
