France is pushing the European Union to hit US technology companies as a countermeasure to tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, suggesting a widening trade conflict in the services sector.
The EU, which is the US’s largest trading partner, pledged to respond after Washington announced new 20% tariffs on the bloc’s exports as part of Trump’s aggressive strategy to reshape the global trading system.
“The mechanism and the products that will be targeted have not yet been decided – it’s a discussion that is taking place among EU members,” French government spokeswoman Sophie Prima said, speaking to RTL radio station.
“But we will also target services – like digital services, which are currently not taxed but could be taxed.”
