Taste Atlas: Two Greek dishes among the world’s top 50 street foods

Taste Atlas has just released its updated list of the 50 best street foods in the world—an annual celebration of global flavors that food lovers eagerly await

Newsroom April 10 07:53

The popular culinary guide, known for curating lists of top-rated dishes, desserts, drinks, and cuisines worldwide, ranked street food favorites from all corners of the globe.

The top five street foods for 2025 are:

  1. Garantita – Algeria
  2. Guotie – China
  3. Siomay – Indonesia
  4. Birria tacos (Quesabirria) – Mexico
  5. Parotta – India

This year, two beloved Greek dishes proudly made the cut, earning well-deserved recognition for their flavor and tradition.

Kontosouvli ranked 19th, while gyros came in at 23rd, showcasing Greece’s rich street food culture that thrives both in bustling neighborhoods and home kitchens.

Here’s what Taste Atlas had to say about kontosouvli:

“Kontosouvli is a traditional Greek dish made from large chunks of pork, marinated in a mix of herbs and spices, then skewered and slowly roasted—similar to gyros or souvlaki. The marinade typically includes garlic, oregano, thyme, rosemary, paprika, olive oil, lemon juice, and red wine. Once marinated, the meat is placed on a large spit and cooked over an open flame, resulting in a rich, flavorful crust and tender, juicy interior. It’s usually sliced thick and served with accompaniments such as pita bread, tzatziki, and traditional Greek salad. Once an Easter specialty, it now features on menus year-round.”
