“In a world of constant and growing hostility, conflict and hatred, Pope Francis was an iconic figure of compassion, empathy and love.” The point was made in a social media post by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America.
He said, “The joy of Passover carries a note of sadness with the great loss of Pope Francis, who now rests in the Lord’s arms.”
The shrine of Pope Francis has been placed on public pilgrimage inside St Peter’s Basilica until 9pm on Friday night. The coffin will be closed in an official ceremony expected to be broadcast by the Vatican before preparations for his funeral begin on Saturday.
