Eurostat: 7% increase in grants of protection status to asylum seekers in 2024

The largest numbers of people granted protection status were recorded in Germany (150,500, 34% of the EU total), France (65,230, 15%) and Spain (50,915, 12%).

In 2024, EU countries granted protection status to 437,900 asylum seekers, an increase of 7% compared to 2023 (409,530), according to Eurostat data released today.

Among these people, 42% received refugee status, 39% received subsidiary protection, and 19% received humanitarian status.

The largest numbers of people granted protection status were recorded in Germany (150,500, 34% of the EU total), France (65,230, 15%), and Spain (50,915, 12%). Together, these 3 countries granted 61% of all protection statuses at the EU level.

As has been the case for several years, Syrians, Afghans, and Venezuelans are the main beneficiaries of protection status in the EU. Specifically, in 2024, Syrians made up 32% of the total number of people granted protection status in the EU, followed by Afghans (17%) and Venezuelans (8%).
