Voridis: The framework for illegal entry and stay in the country will be tightened

"The illegal migrant will face a much more difficult institutional environment", the Immigration Minister told Action 24

Newsroom May 6 09:10

The minister, Makis Voridis, spoke about the new bill of the Ministry of Immigration, which is expected to be presented in May, the first results of the new policy and the change in Europe in relation to illegal immigration, among other things, in a broadcast on Action 24.

“The illegal immigrant who is refused asylum and remains in the country will face a much more unfavourable institutional environment than today,” Voridis made clear, announcing the filing of a bill in May, which tightens the framework for illegal entry and stay in the country. “Increasing the merit system and strengthening administrative detention are key tools for strengthening the return mechanism,” he said.

The minister stressed that the new institutional framework will be accompanied by a more functional administrative mechanism to ensure that the return policy is implemented in practice. He also stressed the shift of the European framework towards stricter regulations.

“In the first quarter, migration flows have fallen by 27%. In the month and a half that I’ve been in office, the population in the facilities has dropped by 12.9%. This shows a more effective control and is a direction in which we are continuing,” the Minister of Migration also noted, while referring

on Europe‘s new stance, he said: “In the past there was the illusion that benefits and integration policies would solve the problem. This has collapsed. Europe has changed its strategy. Now the priority is effective border management and the return of illegal immigrants.”
