The statements by Mitsotakis and El-Sisi after their meeting at the Maximos Mansion (video)

The joint statements of the Prime Minister and the Egyptian President following the conclusion of the High Council of Cooperation between Greece and Egypt

Newsroom May 7 02:26

The President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, received a warm welcome from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis when he arrived at the Maximos Mansion, following a brief earlier meeting with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas.

Immediately after the one-on-one meeting between Mitsotakis and El-Sisi, the proceedings of the High Council of Cooperation began, and finally, the two leaders will deliver statements to the media.

A key component of the shared understanding between Mr. Mitsotakis and Mr. El-Sisi is international law, as a means to address challenges and promote regional stability, at a time when the geopolitical landscape in the region is being reshaped. During their meeting, the two leaders are also expected to discuss recent regional developments in Gaza, Syria, and Libya.

Messages on migration and cooperation with Greece

In his response following the reception by Konstantinos Tasoulas, Mr. El-Sisi referred to the potential for improving relations between Greece and Egypt, with special emphasis on the issue of migration.

The Egyptian President noted that there are 9 million people who want to leave Gaza and go to Egypt. “We want the Palestinians to remain in the Gaza Strip,” he stressed in this context.

He also pointed out that, since 2016, Egypt has not been a bridge for migrants to leave for Europe, adding, “This is a moral and humanitarian issue for us. We do not want to create a problem for our European partners.”

“We are in favor of combating illegal immigration, but legal migration also requires coordination,” the Egyptian President continued.

Mr. El-Sisi, after sending “warm greetings to the friendly Greek people,” emphasized that his country supports peace, stressing that the coordination between Greece and Egypt aims at regional stability.

“Both we and Greece care about stability,” Abdel Fattah El-Sisi concluded.
