The answer to the crucial questions of what caused the big explosion that followed the violent collision in the tragic accident in Tempi is provided by the expert opinion of the National Technical University of Athens, which was assigned by the investigating judge to Professor Dimitris Karonis.
The expert opinion of Mr. Karonis’ expert’s report, which is 123 pages in total and based on analyses and data of the General State Chemistry Department, autopsies and taking materials from the accident site, international scientific data, comparisons and evaluations, concludes that the engine oils (silicone oils under the conditions of the accident can create a fireball as it is judged by the expert that this oil can ignite under temperatures of 330 degrees and above.
The expert report was handed over to the appellate investigator Sotiris Bakaymi and will be studied. It should be noted that expert opinions with a similar conclusion even with a different methodology exist in the case file from technical consultants of victims’ relatives and the Fire Department, as well as opposing ones.
