The Athens Metro is in the final stages of a major project to replace worn track on Lines 2 and 3, with STASY, the company responsible for the fixed infrastructure of the Athens Metro and tram network, announcing that 98% of the contracted works have now been completed. The project is on course to be finished in September, five months ahead of the original deadline of February 2027.

Work has already been completed on the metro network’s busiest sections, between Sepolia and Dafni, and Syntagma and Ethniki Amyna, “further strengthening the reliability and quality of transport,” STASY said in a statement.

Between November 2025 and 6 August 2026, 29.4 kilometres of track were replaced, with 1,950 welds and ultrasonic inspections carried out to ensure the quality and durability of the new track.

The only work remaining to complete the contracted scope is on the final stretch, between Monastiraki and Kerameikos, scheduled for September.

STASY is also awaiting approval from the Court of Audit, Greece’s top audit authority, to extend the contract to cover the replacement of a further 7.3 kilometres of track.

The project, with a total budget of €7.3 million, is the largest overhaul of the trackbed on Lines 2 and 3 since the Athens Metro began operating, aimed at maintaining high standards of safety, reliability and operational availability.
