Christos Mavrikis was arrested in connection with the case involving the attempted bribery of a Supreme Court (Areios Pagos) judge. Police had been searching for Mavrikis as part of a flagrante delicto (caught in the act) procedure, and he was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.
Christos Mavrikis, known from the earlier wiretapping scandal, is the individual who attempted to bribe a senior judge regarding a pending case related to the legalization of a 100-stremma (approx. 25-acre) land plot in the Papagou area.
Following the judge’s report, an urgent preliminary investigation was ordered for the offense of attempting to bribe a judge. The perpetrator was subsequently located and arrested under the flagrante delicto procedure by the Northeastern Attica police division.
The letter received by the Supreme Court judge
It was earlier revealed that a well-known Supreme Court judge reported an attempted bribery after receiving a letter in which he was asked to intervene in a case, with the promise of financial compensation.
However, as soon as the judge read the letter that had been sent to him, he reported the bribery attempt to the leadership of the Supreme Court, also handing over the incriminating letter.
Judicial sources do not rule out the possibility that the person who attempted the bribery—who now faces felony charges—may have been acting on behalf of others, as the judge in question is considered one of the most highly respected members of the new generation of the judiciary.
It is worth noting that Christos Mavrikis was previously convicted in 1998 and sentenced to five years in prison for the high-profile political phone-tapping scandal.
