He highlighted the need to address illegal practices that endanger global trade and the marine environment, and made specific reference to practices such as the circumvention of sanctions. He spoke about the situation in the Red Sea and the importance of collective action in such cases, while emphasizing the leading role that Greece had taken in both the ASPIDES operation and in ATALANTA and IRINI.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined that the freedom of electricity and data connectivity via submarine cables was non-negotiable and a prerequisite for diversification, high quality, and affordability of energy and technology.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the basis for global maritime governance to address current and emerging threats and the need to respect it.
