The former PASOK minister Christos Rokofyllos dies

Christos Rokofyllos, former PASOK minister, has died at 94. The long-serving MP for Aetolia-Acarnania with PASOK, Christos Rokofyllos, passed away at the age of 94. His son, Konstantinos Rokofyllos, announced his passing via social media, writing: “He passed away peacefully today, after living a full, interesting, and creative life, always with dignity. Farewell, dad, safe travels.”

Who Was Christos Rokofyllos?

Christos Rokofyllos was born in 1931 in Amfilochia. He graduated with honors from the Law School of the University of Athens and continued his studies in Paris, earning a PhD in Law from Paris II – Sorbonne University with highest distinction, receiving a monetary award from CNRS for the publication of his dissertation.

He worked as a lawyer in Athens and also taught at the University of Athens. During the political turmoil of 1965, he actively participated in the “Alexandros Papanastasiou” Group, which transformed into the resistance organization “Democratic Defense” following the military coup in April 1967.

After the fall of the dictatorship, he was elected to the Board of Directors of Democratic Defense and played a leading role in merging it with PASOK. He was first elected as an MP for Aetolia-Acarnania in 1977, and served continuously in Parliament from 1985 to 1996. He was also a parliamentary representative for PASOK after the 1993 elections.

Between October 1981 and July 1982, he served as Governor of the Agricultural Bank of Greece, and from 1982 to 1987, he was Greek Ambassador to France, also accredited to UNESCO and the Holy See in the Vatican.

He later served as Deputy Minister of Industry (1994–1995) under Kostas Simitis, and as Deputy Foreign Minister (1999–2000) under George Papandreou. He did not succeed in being re-elected in the April 2000 elections.
