Crete: 21 kg of African dust per acre in Heraklion on Sunday alone

On Monday, residents of Heraklion found that a thick layer of dust covered roads and cars

Newsroom May 27 12:10

On Monday, residents of Heraklion woke up to find a thick layer of dust covering roads and cars, the result of a significant African dust event that hit Crete in recent days.

According to Creta24.gr, Kaloust Paragamian, director of the Institute of Speleological Research of Greece, determined that on Sunday, May 25th alone, approximately 21 kilograms of dust per acre fell in Heraklion. He even shared a magnified photo of the dust as seen through a stereoscope.

The image was striking. On Monday, it became evident that all streets and vehicles were coated in a heavy layer of dust.

Paragamian wrote in his post:

“By sweeping the tiles outside the lab, we collected 250 grams of dust from an area of 12 square meters. That means that roughly 21 kilograms of dust per stremma (1,000 square meters) fell yesterday in Heraklion! In the photo, the dust is magnified 45 times under a stereoscope.”
