Janet Jackson: “I don’t consider myself a legend,” She said about her award at the American Music Awards

The renowned singer was honored with the "Icon" award, one of the highest distinctions of the event

Newsroom May 27 01:30

On Tuesday, May 13th, during the 2025 American Music Awards held in Las Vegas and broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+, Janet Jackson was the center of attention as she received the prestigious “Icon” award. The ceremony was hosted by actress Tasha Smith.

Jackson opened her speech with words of love and gratitude: “I love you all so much. I am so grateful. This is not disrespectful, but I don’t consider myself a legend,” she said, then reflected on the values she was raised with: “My family, I, our dream was never to become famous. We didn’t grow up with that goal. We always had a special love for music, dance, singing — and fame was the result of hard work and dedication. My story, my family’s story, is truly an American story. This could only happen in America.”

She also spoke about the power of inspiration, expressing hope that she has managed to influence young artists: “I hope I have been an inspiration for other artists to follow their dreams and succeed.” After thanking her team and fans, she concluded with emotion: “Thanks to you and to God, I stand here today. I want to thank the AMAs for this honor, for which I am humbly grateful — and finally, I want to say: keep God in every aspect of your life, because He wants to be there. I love you all so much.”

The Grammy-winning singer appeared on stage to perform “Someone to Call My Lover” from 2001. Her appearance peaked with “All for You,” delivered in a funky style with a dance break and an impressive guitar solo.

The “Icon” award is presented to artists who have demonstrated “indisputable cultural and global influence in the music industry.” Previous recipients include Rihanna (2013) and Lionel Richie (2022). Janet Jackson’s performance at the AMAs was her first live televised appearance since 2018. She is also returning to Resorts World for her new residency, “JANET JACKSON: LAS VEGAS,” with six shows from May 21 to 31.
