Prosecution recommends second-degree conviction for Manos Papagianis over Sofía Pavlidou’s assault

The prosecutor has proposed that Manos Papagianis be convicted in the second degree, as the appeal against his conviction for assaulting Sofía Pavlidou in 2018 during a theatrical performance

Newsroom May 27 02:50

The prosecutor emphasized that the defendant’s claim—that former colleagues conspired against him—is not yet deemed convincing. He added that, according to three medical documents submitted by the actress, she sustained physical injuries.

Sofía Pavlidou had accused her colleague of assault backstage during the play, where they both starred. She claimed that Manos Papagianis physically assaulted her by throwing her onto a chair, causing injury, while insulting her.

Specifically, the prosecutor noted: “It appears that the defendant entered Sofía Pavlidou’s dressing room with force. He pushed her. The defendant admitted that he pushed her. All three medical documents submitted by Pavlidou show she has physical injuries. Therefore, the defendant’s actions resulted in injuries to Pavlidou. In my judgment, the testimony of the theater employee, who essentially said nothing happened, is not convincing. The complainant could not have injured herself alone or fallen by herself. The defendant’s claim that his former colleagues conspired against him is also unpersuasive, as no prior issues between anyone have been established here. I propose the conviction, as in the initial trial.”

Earlier, Papagianis’s lawyer, Gianna Panagopoulou, stated on the show “Super Katerina” that Pavlidou was secretly recording Vasilis Gkourousis, the play’s producer, backstage during the performance, which is claimed to have occurred in 2018. She argued that this evidence supports Papagianis’s defense claim of a conspiracy and targeted attack.

The lawyer explained: “The trial continues with Manos’s testimony. I hope it concludes today. He seeks a fair trial. Mr. Papagianis denies (the allegations). He says he is innocent. He urges the court to decide whether there was an incident of bodily harm, which he denies from the start. Pavlidou has filed a lawsuit asking for over 80,000 euros. Mediation was attempted to find an out-of-court resolution. Only the colleague representing Pavlidou attended this process, while we were there. Almost eight years later, we learned he secretly recorded Mr. Gkourousis without his knowledge, and this material exists. This confirms Mr. Papagianis’s position of conspiracy and deliberate behavior aimed at destroying him.”

In November 2022, Manos Papagianis was convicted in court for simple bodily harm, for which he was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended. Pavlidou was acquitted of charges of dangerous bodily harm, but Papagianis’s side filed an appeal. Supporters of Pavlidou included Sotiris Kalivatsis, Rea Toutountzi, Koni Metaxa, and Katia Nikolaidou, while supporters of Papagianis included his wife, Angeliki Daliani, Vasilis Gkourousis, theater producer Dimitris Angelopoulos, and a technical staff member.
