Saint Catherine’s Monastery: The transformation project to revamp the area for millions of tourists – What Egyptian media reveal

A major hotel development overlooking Mount Sinai, along with hotel complexes and shopping centers, are key components of Egypt’s ambitious plan to reshape the region surrounding Saint Catherine’s Monastery. This initiative aims to transform the area into a major tourist hub, attracting millions of visitors and boosting the local economy

The Context of Recent Developments

The recent court decision concerning Saint Catherine’s Monastery is no coincidence. It is indirectly linked to certain circles within Egypt seeking to alter the site’s character and develop it into a prominent center for tourism. Despite reassurances from the Egyptian government that the monastery’s religious integrity will remain unaffected, concerns persist, mainly due to the unclear ownership status of the site.

Nevertheless, this court ruling is seen as part of the broader “Great Transformation” project — a comprehensive tourism development plan targeting spiritual, cultural, and ecological tourism. Saint Catherine’s Monastery and Mount Sinai are among the main attractions envisioned to benefit from this initiative.

Investment and Strategic Goals

The total investment is estimated at approximately $320 million. Authorities emphasize that the project aligns with UNESCO standards, as the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. The Egyptian government aims to attract up to 30 million tourists by 2028, promising significant economic benefits.

Project Components and Progress

Launched in July 2020, the project is now about 90% complete, according to Egyptian media reports. The development includes eco-tourism accommodations such as a large hotel with panoramic views of Mount Sinai, eco-friendly hotels, and traditional guesthouses designed in harmony with local architecture.

An important feature is the planned “Square of Peace,” which will host a museum, conference center, open-air theater, and spaces dedicated to arts and culture.

In Zeituuna, authorities plan to create a new residential area comprising 21 hotel complexes and 546 new homes. Additionally, efforts are underway to restore and enhance the old town, develop commercial shops, and rehabilitate historic buildings and traditional villages.

Specific Plans for the Monastery

Special provisions are included for the monastery itself. The “Great Transformation” envisions constructing a new visitor center at the Sacred Valley’s square, serving as a reception and guidance point for tourists. This center will offer booking offices, cafes, and a planetarium featuring 3D films illustrating the spiritual significance of the region.

Transportation improvements are also planned. Electric vehicles and pedestrian pathways are expected to facilitate access and reduce environmental impact.

Infrastructure and Environmental Considerations

Beyond hotel construction, significant upgrades to infrastructure are proposed. The international airport will be expanded to accommodate commercial flights, improving accessibility for visitors from around the world.

Environmental preservation is a key aspect of the project. Efforts will focus on maintaining the natural landscape and cultural heritage. Plans include reusing underground water resources, implementing flood protection measures, and integrating traditional Bedouin architecture and cultural elements into new residential and commercial developments.

The “Great Transformation” project reflects Egypt’s strategic vision to position Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine’s Monastery as a major global tourist destination, blending cultural heritage with ecological and spiritual tourism. While the initiative promises economic growth and increased international visibility, it also emphasizes the importance of preserving the site’s unique religious and cultural identity.
