With the engines running at full throttle, the metro “Niki” continues its underground journey to the final destination for the delivery of Line 4 of the Athens Metro, the largest public project currently underway.
The 110-meter-long metro pole will dig a total of 7 kilometers of tunnel, preparing the ground for the operation of ten stations.
“We are at the Veikou shaft of Line 4, which is the largest public project currently underway in Greece. It is the construction site from which the Niki metro module started, which will travel 7 kilometers until it reaches the Evaggelismos junction shaft, where it will be dismantled,” explained Nikos Mitzalis of the AVAX managing director’s office.
“At the moment it has travelled about 1.4 kilometres, that is, it is just after the junction of Veikou and Galatsiou Avenues, having completed 20% of the distance. It has opened the first two stations located on this side, namely the Also Veikou station and the Galati station, and is about to open eight more. In total, it will dig 10 stations. On the other side, there is the Athena metro station, which started from Katehaki, has covered about 3.2 km, which is over 60% of the distance it is allotted. In total, both metropods will dig around 13 kilometres.”

“On your visit today, you saw the operation of the “Victory” metro module, a state-of-the-art, 110-metre-long machine, which is being used to open the tunnel section for Line 4 from Veikou to the branching shaft of Evangelismos.

The construction is done with prefabricated rings, the progress, the daily progress is very satisfactory and the pace is such that Athenians should be sure that under the bowels of the capital is a project that will provide a solution to many problems that are currently facing the traffic of Athens” said Mr. Nikos Spyridonakos, project manager.

Asked about the schedules, Mr. Spyridonakos noted that “the initial forecasts based on the schedules are being met in terms of the rhythms of all that we have from the beginning, based on our contractual obligations. From then on, every public project is a dynamic situation that evolves according to the difficulties we face both in construction and in the availability of sites and construction sites.”

Mitzalis added that this is natural “in a project that has 15 stations within the centre of Athens and 33-34 construction site occupations. There are some stations that, as you are hearing, we have not started work on. Where we have started, we are normally keeping to the timetables and we are speeding up as much as we can.”
