Mitsotakis on the Middle East: Priority is restraint & restarting dialogue

In his new weekly post, the Greek Prime Minister calls for de-escalation in the Middle East and a restart of diplomatic talks, before turning his focus to key domestic issues - ranging from OPEKEPE to the return of Greeks from abroad and digital reforms in hospitals

Newsroom June 22 11:20

On the morning of Sunday, June 22, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis published his customary Sunday recap post.

Against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East, the Prime Minister began his weekly Facebook update by calling for restraint and international coordination. As he noted, Europe must rise to the occasion, with discussions expected to continue next week in institutional forums such as the NATO Summit and the European Council.

A central theme of the post was the issue of OPEKEPE (Greek Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aid), with the Prime Minister offering a detailed analysis of both the European and national dimensions of the agricultural subsidies problem. He emphasized the government’s intent to pursue deep institutional reforms. “We cannot allow a small minority of opportunists to tarnish the reputation of the entire agricultural community,” he stated.

He then highlighted actions and statistics regarding the repatriation of Greeks from abroad, the reduction in unemployment, “Career Days” initiatives, employment for persons with disabilities, progress in hospital on-call systems with the “bracelet” technology, home delivery of medications, and the positive response to the new institution of the Personal Pediatrician. The Prime Minister also referenced two operations by the Hellenic Police, infrastructure projects in Thessaloniki, the illumination of historic castles, and the reopening of the Archaeological Museum of Thera.

In conclusion, he issued a strong message calling for tighter fuel market inspections due to international instability, making it clear that anyone involved in abusive practices involving European funds will be required to return the money — in addition to facing potential criminal consequences.
