In an urgent question to the European Commission, New Democracy MEP G. Avtias asks for the immediate intervention of the Commission to provide assistance to Chios, which is being affected by the fires at the beginning of the summer season.
His quote:
From Sunday afternoon, 22 June 2025, three fire outbreaks have broken out in Chios and are spreading across the island due to strong winds. In the last few hours, despite the brave efforts of the fire brigade, the fires are reigniting, resulting in 17 settlements being evacuated for safety reasons and many areas of the island being without power and access to basic goods.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in the last 48 hours in Greece, firefighting forces were called to deal with 110 fires in various parts of the country.
Based on these data, will the European Commission say:
1) Will the European Solidarity Fund be activated to compensate those affected by the fires?
2) Does it intend to finance the creation of a European firefighting corps to assist the Mediterranean countries affected by the fires?
3) Does it intend to provide more resources to the Member States to provide them with means and personnel to prevent and extinguish fires?
4) Will those affected by the fires be compensated within 12 weeks, as recently announced by the Commissioner responsible for Cohesion in response to my question?
