NATO’s decision to increase its defense spending will be disastrous for the alliance and could lead to its eventual collapse, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today.
NATO “must be guided by common sense,” Lavrov said in comments published by the Russian state news agency TASS. Members of the NATO alliance agreed last week to increase defense spending to 5 percent of their countries’ GDP by 2035.
Asked about statements by Poland’s foreign minister, who reportedly said an arms race between Russia and the West could cause the downfall of President Vladimir Putin, Lavrov said he believed NATO could collapse.
“Since he is so prophetic, he probably predicts that a catastrophic budget increase for NATO countries, in my estimation, will also lead to the collapse of this organization,” Lavrov said.
