The need for cooperation from the Libyan authorities to prevent the establishment of a new migration route from eastern Libya to Crete was emphasized during the meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA), held at the Maximos Mansion under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Particular emphasis was placed on the European dimension of the migration issue, especially in light of upcoming visits to Libya by Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and the European Commissioner responsible, Magnus Brunner.

During the meeting, discussions focused on issues concerning the Middle East, the migration crisis—as flows from Libya have increased significantly in recent days—as well as the upgrade of the Hellenic Navy’s MEKO-class frigates.
