In a glittering event at the imposing site of the Olympieion, the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association honored 130 young, outstanding students, who were awarded scholarships for postgraduate studies in Greece and abroad. The initiative, which is being implemented for the third consecutive year under the “Uniting for Education” programme, highlights the practical commitment of the Greek shipowners to support education and the new generation.
In her moving speech, the President Mrs. Melina Traylou, warmly thanked the 67 donors who support the programme and noted:
“Together, we are shaping it into the most expansive and dynamically growing scholarship programme in our country. Its progress is steadily upward.”
Marianna Prokopiou, pictured with Panagiotis Lamprias and his spouse, announced that the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association has already invested over five million euros in this particular programme. She proudly highlighted the continuous increase in scholarship numbers:
“From 101 scholarships, we reached 111 last year — and 130 this year.”
This year’s 130 scholarship recipients come from 21 regions across Greece. They will pursue studies in 11 countries, across 10 scientific disciplines, attending 6 Greek and 45 international universities.
Addressing the scholars, Ms. Travlou described them as “shining examples of inspiration, excellence, and potential,” commending their perseverance, self-belief, and hard work that brought them to this point.
“Today’s world needs people with your level of commitment, passion, and strength. You have both the opportunity — and the responsibility — to drive positive change, open new paths, and help create a better future.”
Aristidis Pittas and WISTA International President Elpi Peraki were also present. Ms. Travlou did not fail to underscore that supporting the next generation is a moral obligation for Greek shipping:
“It is our duty, as representatives of Greek Shipping, the Shipping of Excellence, to continue supporting those who honour the value of excellence and embody the principle of striving to excel.”
She closed by wishing the scholars strength and success in their studies, and a safe return to Greece, encouraging them to bring back knowledge, experiences, and innovative ideas to help strengthen and advance the country:
“Your success is a success for all of us. It is a guarantee of a brighter future for our nation.”
Among those attending were Nikos Hadjiyiannou and his wife. Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni emphasised that the programme has a multiplier effect and goes beyond maritime and economic studies, encompassing the humanities and the arts. She noted the “Excellence” scholarship awarded to the student who achieved a perfect score.

“This programme is becoming a point of reference for young scientists seeking to acquire additional skills as they enter the professional world,” the Minister stated.
She also highlighted the enduring contribution of Greek shipping to the nation’s progress:
“For over two centuries, Greek shipping has invested in excellence, innovation, and knowledge — contributing not only to Greece’s global leadership in maritime affairs, but also to the intellectual and social advancement of our country.”

In closing, Minister Mendoni stressed the importance of public-private partnerships, describing the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association as a “valuable partner” of the Ministry of Culture and the state as a whole.
The evening was dedicated to the new scholarship recipients — the individuals in whom the country places its hopes for the future. Against the backdrop of ancient Athenian heritage and the modern strength of Greek shipping, the ceremony sent a powerful message: excellence and knowledge are the foundation of a Greece that moves forward with confidence and responsibility.
Attendees included the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy Vassilis Kikilias, Michalis Chandris, Giannis Xylas, Aristidis Pittas, Marielena Prokopiou, Nikos Hadjiyiannou, Giorgos Gouroukos, Heraklis Prokopakis, Irini Daifa, Stamatis Tsantanis, Giorgos Alexandratos, Elpi Petraki, Dinos Karoussis, and Andrikos Papandreou.
