Six universities upgraded – €7 million infrastructure projects by the Ministry of Education

"The upgrading of the building infrastructure of the Greek public university is a basic prerequisite for the quality of studies", said the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sophia Zacharaki

Decisions for the implementation of upgrade and maintenance projects at six universities in Greece, with a total budget of more than 7 million euros, were signed by the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sofia Zacharaki.

The projects, the funding of which was included in the Sectoral Development Program of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports (EPR 2021-2025), concern the immediate response to technical and building needs, aiming to upgrade the level of studies and improve the daily life of students and staff of the universities.

The works to be implemented are aimed at:

– Upgrading the functionality and safety of the building facilities and
– To strengthen the development prospects of the institutions in the framework of the National Strategy for Higher Education.

In particular:

Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki – 2.580.727 euros

The operation covers a particularly extensive range of technical and building interventions, including:

– Maintenance and certification of E/M installations (low voltage panels, boilers, elevators),
– Interventions in sewerage and drainage systems,
– Technical support of scientific laboratory equipment (e.g. TEM Jeol, STEM, NMR),
– Manhole cleaning, green interventions and infrastructure for the disabled,
– Local repairs to buildings of the Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture and Building C.

The project enhances the overall operational capacity of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, supporting its educational, research and technical operation.

Democritio University of Thrace – 1,500,000 euros

The project includes maintenance interventions, repairs and small-scale studies in four cities:

– Xanthi: works at the Department of Architecture (repairs, E/M installations, painting, replacements),
– Komotini: interventions at the Law School (interior/exterior building and E/M),
– Didymoteicho: technical rehabilitation of buildings for the housing of the Departments of Nursing and Psychology,
– Kavala: electrical and building works in the student dormitories.

Special studies (topographical, structural, fire safety) and geotechnical study for the restoration of the slope in Alexandroupolis are also included. The project enhances the operational readiness of the DUTH, with particular emphasis on regional and remote structures.

University of Ioannina – 1,000,000 euros

The operation covers interventions in five key buildings of Campus A, and includes:

– Restoration works on coatings and paintings,
– Structural reinforcement in areas of cracking and deterioration of concrete,
– Replacement of worn gutters and waterproofing repairs,
– Cleaning of dangerous or unstable structural elements,
-External surface modifications and drainage works to deal with flooding.

Electromechanical interventions are also included:
– Installation of a 30KHz electrical panel,
– Installation of 300Lt solar water heaters.
– The operation ensures the safety and continuity of the Foundation’s operations at multiple levels.

University of Crete – 998,700 euros

The project includes extensive technical interventions in the University’s premises, and covers:
– Electrical and thermal installations,
– Maintenance and certification of lifts,
– Technical support of critical facilities,
– Small-scale modifications and repairs to public and teaching areas,
– Replacements or repairs to infrastructure elements related to safety, functionality and continuity of instruction.
The project is intended to enhance the day-to-day operation of the institution and prevent future technical failures.

Athens University of Economics and Business – 500,000 euros

The operation concerns the maintenance of the Antoniadou building, one of the main building complexes of the UBA, and covers a wide range of technical and operational interventions. It includes:

– Repair and maintenance works of hydraulic and electromechanical installations,
– Interventions in the fire safety network, internal lighting and accessibility facilities,
– Maintenance of the data and telecommunications network,
– Technical support and repairs of scientific equipment.
The project serves the needs of students and staff, ensuring the functionality and safety of academic activity.

Polytechnic of Crete – 500,000 euros

The operation concerns critical interventions in technical support systems and building infrastructure, in order to maintain the daily operation of the institution’s facilities. Specifically included:

– Maintenance and upgrading of the DATA CENTER,
– Work on the call center and UPS infrastructure,
– Technical support for networks, mechanical installations and energy systems,
– Minor repairs and periodic certification of installations.
The project enhances the digital and technical equipment necessary for the research and educational functions of the Polytechnic.

Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sophia Zacharaki said: “The upgrading of the building infrastructure of the Greek public university is a basic prerequisite for the quality of studies, the safe daily life of students and teachers, as well as the overall development prospects of higher education in our country. With the decisions we have signed, as an investment in the new generation, we are proceeding with the immediate implementation of major projects – with a total budget of more than €7 million – in six flagship universities. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Democritus University of Thrace, the University of Ioannina, the University of Crete, the Athens University of Economics and Business and the Technical University of Crete. These interventions address long-standing technical and building needs, enhance the functionality of the infrastructure and support the educational and research mission of our institutions, while they are part of the Sectoral Development Program of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports for the period 2021-2025, reflecting our firm commitment to support universities and design a sustainable academic environment for the future. I would like to thank the administrations of the institutions for the cooperation we have had and assure them that we continue our efforts with a plan, consistency and sense of responsibility, so that every student, every member of the academic community and the staff who offer their services enjoy a university worthy of their work and expectations.”
