The 32-year-old Algerian mother accused in the tragic case of her 3-year-old daughter’s death in Palaio Faliro is appearing before the examining magistrate today. She faces extremely serious charges, including intentional homicide and domestic abuse.
The case has shocked both the public and authorities, and more revelations are expected regarding the exact circumstances of the child’s death.
On Saturday evening, it was revealed that the bloodstains found in the family’s home in Patissia belonged to the little girl who drowned in Palaio Faliro. The blood was discovered in drawers between the bathroom and the kitchen, further reinforcing suspicions of foul play.
Upon her arrest, the mother initially claimed that the child had fallen in the bathroom and that she then took her to the beach, believing the girl’s body was still warm and her heart was beating. However, during her later statement to the Coast Guard, she changed her story, saying it had been an accident in the sea, claiming the child slipped.
According to Mega TV, the 32-year-old reportedly told authorities:
“I walked into the sea holding the baby, who wasn’t alive. I went as far as I could still stand and left her there. Then I came back, got dressed, told her siblings that we had given her to a friend of mine, and we left.“
In another part of her statement, the woman said:
“The child fell in the bathroom, had head injuries. I wrapped her up and took her out because the other kids wanted to come in. I saw the injuries. I realized she wasn’t alive.“
She added that she panicked and chose not to alert anyone:
“I was scared because I didn’t want to go to the hospital — I knew they’d accuse me. That’s when I decided to go to that beach we had been to before.“
However, forensic evidence supports the theory of criminal activity. Medical examiner Dimitris Galenderis stated the injuries the child suffered do not match the mother’s version. According to Galenderis, the trauma to the child’s skull occurred while she was still alive, and facial injuries were found that are inconsistent with drowning.
The case is further complicated by the mother’s previous run-ins with authorities over domestic violence and endangerment of minors. In 2022, she was arrested for exposing her then-2-year-old child to danger, but was released on the prosecutor’s orders. There are also reports of abuse by the child’s father.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining all aspects of the child’s tragic death, the role of the mother’s partner, and the history of reported domestic violence.
Meanwhile, the woman’s two other children, a 4-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, have been placed under protection at the “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, where they are being supported by a child psychologist.
