Music Schools: Upgraded with new instruments and equipment

The replacement and upgrading of instruments and equipment will be carried out through an international tender with a budget of €10 million

Newsroom August 5 04:30

For the first time since 2008, the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports is moving forward with the replacement, upgrade, and enrichment of musical instruments and related equipment in all Music Schools across Greece.

Through an international tender with a €10 million budget, all types of musical instruments—both traditional and modern—will be purchased. These include tambouras, lyra, oud, lute, violins, cellos, classical and electric guitars, electric pianos, flutes, saxophones, trumpets, and vibraphones. In addition, necessary equipment such as footstools, wall-mounted and floor stands, orchestral and instrument music stands, tuners, and metronomes will also be procured.

During the previous school year, a total of 9,932 students attended the 52 Music Schools nationwide.

Minister Sofia Zacharaki stated:
“The structured upgrade and enrichment of equipment, with the procurement of new musical instruments—for the first time in 17 years—for the 52 music schools of the country, is a substantial intervention. Our music schools are a vital institution in public education. They are ‘living’ schools that cultivate both soul and mind and promote artistic expression. At the same time, they pass on our traditional music to younger generations. Every day, we fight and win small and large ‘battles’, with the goal of quality education at every level, for every child, in every corner of Greece.”

In the school years 2021–2022 and 2022–2023, music schools were similarly supported with music technology and sound equipment.

The €10 million funding for the new musical instruments falls under the priority axis:
“Development and modernization of infrastructure at all levels of education”
(part of the shift toward a decentralized system with fewer, larger units; enhanced digital and other infrastructure; teacher training, etc.), under the National Development Program (NDP) 2021–2025.
