On Thursday, 7 August 2025, the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sport, Mrs Sofia Zacharaki, paid a visit to the site of the “Ionic Centre” under construction by the Holy Metropolis of Nea Ionia, Filadelfia, Heraklion and Chalkidonos, located in the area of Perissos.

The Minister was warmly welcomed by His Eminence Metropolitan Gabriel of Nea Ionia, who gave her a tour of the exterior and interior of the developing Centre, as well as the theme park that surrounds it.

During the visit, Metropolitan Gabriel informed the Minister about the progress of the works and highlighted the important character of the “Ionian Centre”, which aspires to become a dynamic cell of culture, education, and social contribution. Particular emphasis is placed on the preservation of the historical memory of the refugee Hellenism and the promotion of the Asia Minor heritage, which is an integral part of the collective identity of modern Greece.

Mrs. Zacharaki expressed her sincere admiration for this initiative of the Holy Metropolis, stressing the importance of such important projects for the preservation of the historical and cultural continuity of Hellenism, as well as for the strengthening of education based on the values of memory, tradition and social solidarity.

His Eminence Metropolitan Gabriel warmly thanked the Minister for her presence and her interest, noting the importance of cooperation between the Church and the State in promoting common goals for the benefit of society and young generations.
