The murder of a 39-year-old pregnant woman and her 50-year-old partner, who was found decapitated with his head mounted on a stake, has caused outrage in Australia.
According to the Daily Mail, the gruesome crime occurred shortly before 10 pm on Monday at the couple’s home in Mount Waverly, Melbourne’s southeastern suburb.
Police received the first call at 9.20 pm when a neighbour reported hearing loud voices from the house. A second call followed, reporting escalating tension, and at 21:5,5, strong forces surrounded the home.
Officers who entered the home found the couple dead, with 50-year-old Andrew Gunn suffering gruesome injuries and decapitated, while Athena Georgopoulou’s body lay next to him.
A 34-year-old homeless man was arrested the same night for the double murder that local authorities are calling a “targeted attack.” The suspect was arrested four hours later at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday at Westall Station, about six miles from the crime scene. He had two large dogs with him and, according to authorities, knew the victims. He was charged with manslaughter and is expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Athena Georgopoulou, who was in her fifth month of pregnancy, was looking forward to becoming a mother. “She was so happy because she didn’t think she could have a baby,” her aunt, Patti Dilveridis, told the Herald Sun, adding that she had spoken to her two days before and had heard her happy.
Georgopoulou cared for her mother while she worked in customer service departments of electricity and insurance companies.
Authorities are continuing to investigate to determine the motive and the perpetrator’s relationship to the victims. It has been confirmed that a weapon was used, although not a firearm. The area remains cordoned off, and forensic examinations are scheduled for Wednesday.
Meanwhile, investigators are examining whether threatening graffiti outside the home, with phrases such as “U R Gay,” “Enough is Enough,” “Betrayal,” and “Karma,” which were written in yellow-green and black paint on fences and walls, is related to the crime.
