Watch video: The moment the plane engine exploded over Corfu

Eyewitnesses captured a series of flashes and loud noises as the flight to Düsseldorf gained altitude above the city

Newsroom August 17 08:52

Dramatic footage shows explosions from the engine of a Condor aircraft flying from Corfu to Düsseldorf, recorded by an eyewitness.

The video, uploaded on TikTok, shows the aircraft climbing shortly after takeoff.

Bright flashes from the engine explosions are clearly visible, accompanied by the sound of the blasts.

Moments later, the aircraft makes a right turn while smoke emerges from the engine.

The Boeing 757, carrying about 250 passengers, took off from Corfu on Saturday afternoon.

For reasons not yet known, one of its engines caught fire during the flight. The aircraft was at an altitude of about 1,500 feet when the right engine began burning, prompting the pilots to shut it down.

According to reports, the aircraft then performed a go-around, turning right and flying parallel to the runway. It later headed northwest of Corfu, reaching altitudes of 6,000–8,000 feet, before diverting to Brindisi Airport in Italy, where it landed safely.

Meanwhile, residents of Corfu city said they could see the plane’s engine. When the aircraft flew over the port, locals and tourists alike heard a deafening noise.

Although Corfu airport initially prepared for an emergency landing, the pilots ultimately decided to divert and land in Italy.
