Weather with high temperature and humidity will prevail for another 24 hours, with mercury gradually dropping from Saturday. Yesterday the thermometer exceeded 38 degrees Celsius, while today the mercury is expected to “climb” to 40 degrees Celsius in the eastern mainland. However, until noon in the northern Ionian Sea (Corfu – Diapontian Islands – Paxos) and the coastal areas of Epirus, according to the National Weather Service (EMY), intense rain and thunderstorms are forecasted in places.
The areas with the highest temperatures – likely to reach 42°C locally – will be Fthiotida, Boeotia, Attica, Argolida, Arcadia, Laconia, according to a forecast by MEGA meteorologist Christina Rigou.
For his part, Dimitris Ziakopoulos speaks of “a bometric low in the northern Adriatic, accompanied by a cold front extending as far as Tunisia, moving northeast and the new 24-hour period is expected to cause local rain and thunderstorms in NW Greece, West Thessaly and central-western Macedonia. “On Monday (25/8), a few showers are likely to occur in the afternoon in Macedonia. N-NE winds in eastern and southern Greece will strengthen by one Beaufort and the temperature will not exceed 35 degrees. On Tuesday (26/8), no rain is forecast. Winds will blow north in the west at 3 to 4 Beaufort and in the east at 5 to 6 Beaufort. The temperature in the Ionian Sea and the mainland will rise by 1 to 2 degrees,” it concludes.

High temperatures were recorded in the country on Thursday 21/08, with the maximum temperature in the Peloponnese exceeding 38°C. According to the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, on Thursday 21/08 the maximum temperature was recorded in Skala Messinia at 38.6 °C followed by Petrokefali Heraklion at 37.7 °C.
