Weather: Strong winds and rising temperatures today – Very high fire risk in 5 regions

Yesterday temperatures exceeded 35°C in Heraklion and Chania – EMY’s forecast for the weekend

Newsroom August 27 07:51

With the meltemi winds persisting over the Aegean and temperatures climbing but remaining within seasonal norms, the weather pattern will hold steady through the start of September. The only exceptions will be some local showers in mountainous areas, which are not expected to affect the overall outlook.

In his latest forecast, meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis noted that temperatures will stay within normal seasonal ranges until September 10, with increased rainfall expected from mid-month onward. He stressed that while a slight temperature rise is anticipated next week, it cannot be considered a heatwave.

According to the Open TV forecaster, strong northerly winds will continue in the coming days, reaching up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean. Afternoon showers are likely in mountainous areas of central and northern Greece. Winds in the central Aegean and the Carpathian Sea may reach gale force, while in Crete, katabatic winds will create warmer and drier conditions, especially in the island’s southern regions.

Very high fire risk in Attica and 4 other regions

A very high fire danger warning (risk category 4) has been issued today for Attica, parts of Central Greece, Crete, the North Aegean, and the South Aegean, according to the Fire Risk Forecast Map published by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr).

Specifically, the areas at very high risk today are:

  • Attica Region
  • Central Greece Region (Regional Units of Boeotia, Euboea)
  • North Aegean Region (Regional Units of Lesvos, Chios, Ikaria)
  • South Aegean Region (Regional Unit of Karpathos)
  • Crete Region (Regional Units of Rethymno, Heraklion, Lasithi)

The Secretariat has already notified relevant state services, regional authorities, and municipalities to remain on heightened civil protection alert in order to respond immediately to potential fire incidents.
