The first phase of EuroBasket 2025 has concluded for the first two groups, determining four of the eight total matchups in the Round of 16. Yesterday’s victory by Turkey over Serbia shifted the balance in the knockout bracket.
The Greek National Team faces Spain in Limassol today (Sept. 4, 21:30). A win would secure 1st place in Group C, giving Greece a strong path to go deep in the tournament. If the “blue-and-whites” finish first, they will face the 4th-placed team from Group D in the Round of 16—most likely the loser of the Slovenia vs. Israel clash.
Should Greece advance, they would then meet in the quarterfinals the winner of Lithuania (without Rokas Jokubaitis) vs. hosts Latvia.
If they reach the semifinals, the strongest possible opponent would be Turkey. Meanwhile, Germany and Serbia are on course to clash in the other semifinal, meaning Greece could only face them in the final.
On the other hand, if Greece loses to Spain and Bosnia & Herzegovina beats Georgia earlier in the day, Greece would drop to 4th in the group. That scenario would pit them against the winner of Group D (France, Poland, or Israel) in the Round of 16, and a likely quarterfinal against Serbia.
The group stage of EuroBasket 2025 comes to an end, and the Greek National Team faces its biggest test yet in the tournament. On Thursday night, Greece will go head-to-head with Spain in a clash that could define the path forward, at the “Spyros Kyprianou” Arena in Limassol.
Tip-off is scheduled for 21:30, with live broadcast on ERTNEWS.
Greece currently tops Group C with a 3-1 record and is seeking victory to secure first place and a more favorable draw in the Round of 16. Following the loss to Bosnia (77–80), the return of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Giannoulis Larentzakis is expected to provide both a boost in motivation and much-needed confidence for the squad.
The Scenarios for Greece’s Group Finish
The clearest path is simple: Greece will clinch first place if they defeat Spain in Thursday’s game. At the same time, such a result would also eliminate Spain from the tournament for the first time in 33 years—provided Bosnia also defeats Georgia.
If Greece loses, four alternative scenarios come into play, depending on other group results:
- 1st place: Greece beats Spain, regardless of other outcomes.
- 2nd place: Greece loses to Spain by up to 27 points, Italy beats Cyprus, and Georgia beats Bosnia.
- 3rd place: Greece loses to Spain by 28 points or more, Italy beats Cyprus, and Georgia beats Bosnia.
- 4th place (a): Greece loses to Spain, Italy beats Cyprus, and Bosnia beats Georgia.
- 4th place (b): Greece loses to Spain, Italy loses to Cyprus, and Bosnia beats Georgia.
Current Group C Standings
- Greece: 3–1
- Italy: 3–1
- Spain: 2–2
- Bosnia: 2–2
- Georgia: 2–2
- Cyprus: 0–4
