The captain and the chief engineer of the Blue Star Chios were arrested for the death of 20-year-old Tasos

The two arrested are charged with negligent homicide – They were brought before the prosecutor

Newsroom September 24 06:32

The captain and the chief engineer of the passenger-car ferry Blue Star Chios were arrested by port authorities following the fatal injury of a 20-year-old crew member.

The two men are charged under Article 302 of the Penal Code (negligent homicide) and were taken before the prosecutor.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours, when the young sailor, serving as a cleaner, became trapped in a watertight door of the ship during its scheduled Rhodes–Piraeus voyage, which included stops at Chalki, Diafani, Karpathos, Kasos, Anafi, and Santorini.

Upon arrival at the port of Piraeus, the injured sailor was taken by an EKAB ambulance to “Tzaneio” General Hospital, where his death was confirmed. The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the 1st Port Department of Tzelepi, part of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus.

20-year-old Tasos killed during his training voyage
Tasos, only 20 years old, lost his life on board just 15 days after beginning his mandatory training voyage as part of his studies at a maritime academy. The young man, full of dreams and hopes for a career in shipping, never got the chance to fulfill his vision.

According to reports, he was heading toward the engine room when the door apparently opened, allowing him to enter, but then closed on him, trapping him and causing fatal injuries.

Initial assessments suggest part of his clothing got caught in the door, preventing him from freeing himself before it shut completely.

Upon arrival in Piraeus, an EKAB ambulance transported him to the hospital, but despite doctors’ efforts, his life could not be saved.

The pain is unbearable for his family, who cannot believe that just weeks ago their son set off full of dreams, only to return lifeless. His colleagues expressed their shock at the tragedy, noting that the young trainee sailor had shown dedication and eagerness to learn the job.

The Hellenic Coast Guard is conducting a preliminary investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident, and the competent prosecutor has been informed.
