Evro: 13 Turkish nationals arrested with 147 weapons face felony charges

They were referred to the investigating judge, who gave them a deadline for next week

Newsroom October 4 01:26

The Alexandroupoli prosecutor was brought before the Alexandroupolis district attorney this morning, 13 Turks who were arrested by police officers of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of Northern Greece, accused of carrying 147 pistols and 190 magazines, as well as parts and components of weapons.

They were prosecuted as felons and were referred to the investigating magistrate, from whom they were given a deadline for next week. They remain in custody until their criminal treatment is decided.

The 13 foreigners were arrested in an area of Soufli, in Evros, after an operation by the so-called Greek FBI, which appears to have had information about their movements.

The arrested men, seven men and six women, had crossed into Greek territory, having previously crossed the Evros River by boat, and were carrying their arsenal of weapons in sacks.

The weapons are estimated, according to sources of the Hellenic Police, to have ended up with members of a gang of their compatriots, both inside and outside the Greek borders.

According to information, the defendants claimed that the owner of the boat indicated to them a person to whom they were going to deliver the cargo, the contents of which, as they said, they did not know. They stated that they intended to come to Greece to seek political asylum.
