In 2024, 107 women were murdered by their partner or ex-partner in France, 11% more than in 2023, according to the latest figures from the Interior Ministry.
In total, 138 violent intra-couple deaths were recorded by police last year. In 31 cases, the victims were men, according to the annual report on the issue posted on the ministry’s website.
“On average, one death is recorded every three days,” according to the report. In 2024, 403 attempted murders within the couple were recorded.
More specifically, 90% of intra-couple homicides were committed in the home of the couple, the victim, or the perpetrator. A sharp weapon (knife) was used in 49 cases, and a firearm in 34 cases.
In 31% of the incidents, a fight had preceded the incident, and 16% occurred in separation circumstances that were not accepted by the perpetrator.
Typical profile of the perpetrator: male, in a relationship, French nationality, without professional employment, or having lost professional employment. The majority are aged between 20 and 49, with an increase in incidents in the 70s compared to 2023, according to the report.
As for the victims, 47% are women who had reported previous attacks to the security services. 81% of them had filed a complaint. One victim had an emergency telephone (panic button), two victims had been issued a protection order, and one perpetrator was under judicial review.
