Nikos Christodoulides: Electric interconnection with other neighbouring countries of Cyprus is being considered

The Cypriot President spoke at the 13th Energy Symposium in Nicosia

Newsroom November 19 09:38

Nicosia‘s intention to proceed with new electricity interconnections with neighbouring states, enhancing Cyprus‘ regional role on the energy map, was highlighted by Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides during his speech at the 13th Energy Symposium in Nicosia.

President Christodoulides stressed that Cyprus’ participation in the “3+1” mechanism with Greece and the US confirms the country’s strategic aspiration to be part of the energy solutions in the Eastern Mediterranean, with the aim of enhancing energy security and aligning its interests with those of powerful states. As he noted, Cyprus seeks to act as an alternative energy corridor to Europe.

President Christodoulides also referred to the estimates for 2027 regarding the export of the first natural gas from the Cypriot fields through the Cronos-Damietta infrastructure, stressing that such a development will be an important milestone and will effectively place Cyprus on the EU’s energy map.

A central point of his statement was also the electrical interconnection with Greece. The Cypriot President said that the cooperation between the two countries is a firm strategic choice and that, in full consultation with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the decision to update the economic and technical parameters of the project was recently taken. This is a critical infrastructure that will connect Cyprus with Europe in terms of energy and will enhance long-term security of supply.

“Our position is clear in relation to energy interconnection, while at the same time we are discussing such electrical interconnections with other neighbouring states as well,” the Cypriot President said.
