Athens responds to Zakharova: Threats against Sovereign States are automatically rejected

Diplomatic sources emphasize that it is the obvious right of every state to enter into international agreements

Newsroom November 20 11:20

Athens immediately responded to Moscow’s unprecedented provocation, as expressed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

“Greece always acts in its international relations with adherence to international law and respect for states. It is self-evident that every state has the right to enter into bilateral agreements. Especially when agreements, such as that between Greece and Ukraine, ensure energy sufficiency and security, which are essential conditions for human well-being. Threats against sovereign states are automatically rejected,” diplomatic sources stated.

Previously, commenting on Greece’s decision to develop and use maritime unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) with Ukraine—announced during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent visit to Athens and meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis—Zakharova issued an unprecedented provocation.

She claimed that Greece follows a “confrontational policy toward Russia and engages in genuinely hostile actions,” adding: “Athens was among the first capitals to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which the Ukrainian armed forces use daily against civilians in Donbas, the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, Crimea, and other southern areas of our country. And all this despite the fact that Greeks have lived in these areas since time immemorial.”

In her statements, reported by the TASS agency, Zakharova said: “Another confirmation was the so-called agreements with the Nazi regime in Kyiv on November 17, including the development and use of maritime unmanned aerial vehicles. This step, along with many other anti-Russian actions by the collective Western world aimed at defeating Russia on the battlefield, has received the necessary evaluation from our side, and an appropriate response will follow.”

It is noted that in the joint Mitsotakis-Zelensky statement after the Ukrainian president’s visit to Athens, it was stated that “the parties agreed to deepen defense cooperation, focusing on enhancing security in the maritime sector, including collaboration in the development and use of maritime unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for conducting joint exercises and training related to unmanned maritime systems, as well as enhanced information sharing on maritime threats.”
