Weather: Heavy rain and thunderstorms in Ionian, Epirus and Aitoloakarnania

For cold invasion and snow in the north over the weekend, speaks of Marousakis - Warning Tsatrafyllia for farmers

Newsroom November 21 07:46

Bad weather persists in the west of the country, with heavy rains and thunderstorms hitting the Ionian Islands, Aitoloakarnania, and Epirus, while a lull is expected late on Saturday night.

The weather will be quieter in the evening until late Saturday night and late afternoon.
EMY warns that heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will affect the Ionian Islands (Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca), Aitoloakarnania, and Epirus today (Friday).

According to meteorologist Klearxos Marousakis, “dangerous rainstorms persist until Saturday towards the west-northwestern parts.” Then the movement of polar air mass from the northwestern Balkans will significantly lower the temperature and bring snow in mountainous areas of central and northern Greece, possibly also at lower altitudes in western Macedonia.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias stresses that “Aitoloakarnania, Preveza, Arta, Corfu, Thesprotia, Kefalonia, and Lefkada will see a lot of rain in the next two days”, while noting that at the beginning of the new week, frost conditions at night and in the morning will create problems mainly in the agricultural sector.

The two faces of the weather for the weekend 11/18-20/2025 – Very high cumulative precipitation totals in the northwest

The weather in Greece presented two faces during the three-day period, Tuesday 18/11 – Thursday 20/11. Significant rain and heavy thunderstorms occurred in the western and northern parts of the country, while in the south and east, the phenomena were very limited and of low intensity.

As the map of the relevant image shows, the cumulative precipitation from the beginning of Tuesday, 18/11, until 10:30 on Thursday, 20/11, exceeded 200 mm in the mountainous areas of Epirus, while in parts of Thessaly, Sterea, Peloponnese, Peloponnese, Evia, Crete, and the Aegean islands, no precipitation was recorded.

The highest cumulative precipitation height was recorded at the station of Konitsa and was equal to 246.8 mm. As shown by the additional information presented in the image, 29 of the 543 active stations of the meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens network (~5%) exceeded 100 mm.

Today’s weather

Showers and thunderstorms are expected in the Ionian Sea, the west, and the northern mainland. In the rest of the country, there will be intermittent clouds with a possibility of occasional localised showers. Dust concentrations in the atmosphere will be relatively high.

The temperature in Western Macedonia will range from 5 to 17 degrees Celsius in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 13 to 22 degrees Celsius, in Thessaly from 9 to 22, in Epirus and Western Central Greece from 12 to 19, in the rest of Central Greece from 15 to 22, in the Peloponnese from 8 to 23 degrees Celsius, in the Ionian Islands from 17 to 20, in the North and East Aegean Islands from 12 to 22, in the Cyclades from 17 to 22, in the Dodecanese from 18 to 23 and in Crete from 9 to 24 degrees Celsius.

The winds in the sea will blow from southern directions from 4 to 6 Beaufort and occasionally up to 7 Beaufort.

In Attica, clouds are expected with a possibility of occasional light local rain. Winds will blow from southern directions 3 to 5 Beaufort. The temperature in the center of Athens will range from 17 to 21 degrees Celsius.

In the prefecture of Thessaloniki, cloudy and occasional rainfall are expected. Winds will blow from southeastern directions from 2 to 4 Beaufort and occasionally up to 5 Beaufort. The temperature in the center of Thessaloniki will range from 17 to 22 degrees Celsius.

The weather on Saturday, November 22

In the west and the north, increasing clouds with showers. In the Ionian Sea, Epirus, western Sterea, and northwestern Peloponnese, there will be thunderstorms, possibly heavy in places, until the afternoon.

In the rest of the country, thin clouds at times more dense with local rain in Thessaly, eastern Sterea, eastern Peloponnese, the islands of the eastern Aegean and in the morning hours in the Dodecanese. Some snow will fall late at night in the mountains of Epirus and Macedonia. Meteorological conditions favour the transport of African dust mainly in the east and south.

Winds will blow from southern directions 4 to 6 and locally in the northern Aegean Sea 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop slightly in the northwest. It will reach 20 to 23 degrees Celsius in most areas and locally in the Dodecanese and northern Crete, 24 to 25 degrees Celsius.

The weather on Sunday, 23 November

In the west, cloudy with showers and occasional thunderstorms, and gradual improvement from noon. In the north, the eastern Aegean and Crete will have clouds with local showers, which will be limited in the afternoon in the Dodecanese and will stop in the rest of the regions. Some snow will fall in the mountains of Epirus and Macedonia. In the rest of the country, thin clouds at times are more dense. Meteorological conditions favour the transport of African dust to the east.
