Powerful storm in Attica – “Adel” batters western Greece with hail and floods

The severe weather system Adel is in full progression, unleashing intense phenomena across Greece that are expected to continue until Saturday morning

Newsroom November 27 07:15

Rivers have overflowed, landslides are occurring in several regions, and in Tzoumerka some homes now stand just meters from steep drop-offs due to collapsing ground.

Attica Hit by Strong Thunderstorm

On Thursday afternoon, the storm reached Attica, bringing a powerful thunderstorm over Athens and Piraeus.

Meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas notes that meteorologists are focusing especially on Western and Southern Peloponnese, as well as Central–Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. He urges residents in Aitolokarnania, Messinia, and Northern Greece (from Asprovalta eastwards) to be extremely cautious on Thursday night.

Where the Weather Will Hit on Friday

  • Friday morning: Western & Southern Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia, and Thrace, with particular warning issued for Thasos.
  • Attica: Two waves of weather—one overnight and one after dawn on Friday.
  • Friday afternoon: Heavy storms expected in Eastern Macedonia–Thrace and the Eastern Aegean, especially Chios, Samos, and Ikaria.
  • Weekend: The system shifts toward the Dodecanese, where it will weaken gradually by midday Saturday.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS/EMY) maintains its emergency bulletin without changes.

Adel Pounds Western Greece

New data released by Meteo highlight the severity:

  • Rainfall exceeded 100 mm at seven stations,
  • Over 80 mm at twenty-two stations,
  • Over 60 mm at forty-one stations.

Persistent, heavy rainfall affected Western Greece from Wednesday (Nov 26) through Thursday afternoon, with the Peloponnese severely hit.

Floods and Hailstorms

Flooding is reported in the port of Agia Kyriaki in Kefalonia’s Zola area, with roads becoming impassable.
Intense hailstorms struck Mandra (Xanthi), while in Amfilochia a local torrent overflowed.

Homes “Hanging in the Air” in Tzoumerka

In the village Agnanta, a large landslide caused by continuous heavy rain has destabilized land just 50 meters from houses. Overnight, a large retaining wall collapsed between a hotel and nearby homes, fortunately without causing damage.

Regional governor Alexandros Kachrimanis told Proto Thema that crews have redirected water flow away from Tzoumerka’s villages, and geologists are already on-site to prevent further destruction.

Widespread Damage in Thesprotia

The plain of Paramythia has turned into a massive lake, with animals stranded in flooded farmland.
In Parapotamos, residents count extensive damage to crops and property. Strong winds uprooted trees and destroyed business facilities.

Megansi (Lefkada): Streets Become Rivers

Two homes flooded as torrents swept through roads. Municipal crews are pumping water from properties.

Tornado Hits Finikounda (Messinia)

Since late Wednesday, Adel has severely impacted Messinia, placing the region under Red Code alert.
Around 7 a.m. on Thursday, a violent hailstorm was followed by a sudden wind shift that produced a tornado.

In Finikounda—especially the Mavrovouni area—homes and businesses suffered serious damage:

  • shattered windows,
  • torn-off roofs and awnings,
  • trees uprooted and thrown into structures.

Major Problems in Western Greece

Severe flooding struck Corfu and Aitolokarnania late Wednesday.
Residents received 112 emergency alerts to avoid nonessential movement.

In Corfu, roads turned into rivers, trapping drivers. Fire crews performed water pumping operations in Kokkini, Potamos, and Afra. Landslides occurred in Agii Deka, Benitses, and Dassia, while a stream overflowed in Alepou and Triklino.

In Zevgaraki (Agrinio), floodwaters carried debris into residential areas, prompting immediate intervention by municipal crews.

Heavy rainfall also struck Rivio and Chaliki in Aitoliko.

An Aegean Airlines flight from Athens to Corfu was forced to return to Athens at 20:30 due to the severe weather.
