The Dangerous 12-hour period of storm ‘Adel’ on Friday: Thunderstorms and hail in Attica, areas under Red Code – See maps

Storm 'Adel' is causing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail across much of Greece, with Civil Protection on “red alert”

  • Friday will bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, and even large hail in places, especially in Attica.
  • Localized strong showers and thunderstorms will occur in Western Greece, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, and the Sporades islands.
  • By midday, storms will affect the Northern and Eastern Aegean islands and the Cyclades, and by evening, the Dodecanese and Crete.
  • Snow will fall in western, central, and northern mountainous areas.
  • The rainfall event is rated as category 4 (very significant).

Red Code Alerts and Critical Hours:

  • The Greek Civil Protection issued a “RED CODE” alert for the Northern Aegean and the Dodecanese.
  • Other regions already on red alert include the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece, the Peloponnese, Central Macedonia, and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
  • The critical period is approximately a 12-hour window from early Friday morning until midday, but storms will persist mainly in the Dodecanese afterward.
  • Fire and rescue services are on full alert, ready to respond as needed.

Storm progression on Friday:

  • Morning storms will impact Western and Southern Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia, and Thrace, with special attention advised for the island of Thasos.
  • Attica will see two passes of the storm: one during the night and one after dawn.
  • By Friday afternoon and evening, storms will affect Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the Eastern Aegean (notably Chios, Samos, and Ikaria), and continue overnight in the Dodecanese.
  • By Saturday midday, the storm will weaken in the Dodecanese.

  • On Thursday, heavy rains and storms hit the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and northern regions.
  • Flooding blocked roads at the port of Agia Kyriaki in Kefalonia.
  • Severe hail damaged areas in Xanthi; rivers swelled in Amfilochia.
  • Landslides occurred in Tzoumerka, putting homes at risk; geological experts are assessing the area.
  • Flooding in Thesprotia’s Paramythia plains has left fields submerged and animals stranded.
  • Wind damage and fallen trees affected businesses and homes in Messinia, especially in Finikounta.
  • Roads and houses flooded in Meganisi (Lefkada).
