Florida: 58-year-old woman killed in a golf cart accident driven by her Greek-American husband

64-year-old Angelo Theodosiou is charged with drink-driving and refusing to submit to checks, while he pleads not guilty

Newsroom December 8 10:04

A 58-year-old woman, Christina Theodosiou, died in Florida, USA, about a week ago when she fell from a golf cart driven by her 64-year-old husband.

According to Law and Crime, Angelo Theodosiou was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and refusing to submit to police checks, while he claims through his lawyer that he was not drunk and did not cause the accident.

How the incident happened

According to an arrest report from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred around 10:45 p.m. on the evening of November 30, when Angelo Theodosiou was allegedly driving a golf cart with his wife as a passenger. During the ride, the 58-year-old woman fell from the vehicle and was seriously injured.

“The victim, the defendant’s wife, hit her head on the ground and was airlifted by helicopter to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital with a grade 3 on the Glasgow scale during air ambulance transport.” A short time later, Christina Theodosiou succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities recorded that the driver was deemed at fault (“at fault driver”) for the incident. Angelo Theodosiou was arrested and taken to the St. Johns County Jail; however, authorities say he was released on bail on December 1, one day after his arrest. His next scheduled court appearance is set for January 6, 2026.

Indications of intoxication and refusal to control

The arrest report states that the officers handling the case found evidence of alcohol consumption, including the 64-year-old’s red eyes and the odour of an alcoholic beverage which they could smell on him from three feet away in an open area. At the same time, it was reported that although the man knew that a driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) investigation was underway, he nevertheless refused to submit to a standardized sobriety test.

“After being taken into custody, the defendant repeatedly asked what was going on and why he was being arrested,” the report added.

The 64-year-old has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and refusing to submit to police checks. According to the same document, while he initially allegedly agreed to submit to a breathalyzer test, he later changed his attitude.

Through his attorney, Angelo Theodosiou denies the charges and maintains that he was not under the influence of alcohol nor did he cause the crash. “My client maintains his innocence, and we look forward to receiving the evidence,” his attorney, L. Lee Lockett, told the local St. Johns Citizen website. “He did not cause the accident; he was not under the influence of alcohol,” he added.

The Greek-American’s attorney also noted that the 64-year-old is “devastated” by the death of his wife. The couple had moved to Florida from New York, where Theodosiou had run a restaurant in Queens for many years. According to local reports, family members of the couple say they “stand by” the defendant.
