British singer and guitarist Chris Rea, known for hits such as “Driving Home for Christmas,” has died at the age of 74, according to a representative of his family

“With great sadness we announce the death of our beloved Chris. He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today after a short illness, surrounded by his family,” the statement said.

Chris Rea was a distinctive musical figure, blending blues, pop, soul, and soft rock in a career that included 25 studio albums.

Among his greatest hits are The Road to Hell, On the Beach, Josephine, and of course Driving Home for Christmas, which has become established as one of the most beloved Christmas songs worldwide. Overall, he sold more than 30 million albums.
