Weather: Storms and gale-force winds in Western Greece today, rainy Epiphany in several regions

Weather conditions also favor the transport of dust – Temperatures to drop from Thursday

Newsroom January 5 08:57

Stormy southerly winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea, along with locally heavy rain and thunderstorms from the afternoon in the northern Ionian and Epirus and from the evening in western Central Greece, are the main weather features for today, Monday.

Today’s Weather

Increased cloud cover across most parts of the country, with local rainfall mainly in western and northern regions, the islands of the eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese. Isolated thunderstorms will initially occur in the northwest and gradually spread to other western areas. From the afternoon, weather phenomena may become locally intense in the northern Ionian and Epirus, and from the evening in western Central Greece. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible on the islands of the eastern Aegean. From the afternoon onward, light snowfall is expected in the mountainous areas of western and northern mainland Greece.

Meteorological conditions favor the transport of African dust in western regions.

Winds will blow from southern directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort, locally reaching 7 in coastal and maritime areas, and up to 8 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea and temporarily in the Aegean.

Temperatures will see a slight drop in northern areas. Highs will reach 16–17°C in central and northern mainland regions, and 18–19°C in the rest of the country.

Weather on Epiphany

Tomorrow, on Epiphany, increased cloud cover with rain and scattered thunderstorms—possibly locally strong—is expected in the Ionian Sea, Epirus, western Central Greece, western Peloponnese, eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and the northeastern Aegean.

In the rest of the country, temporarily increased cloudiness with local rain is expected, mainly in northern regions and the eastern islands.

Light snowfall will occur in the mountainous areas of northwestern Greece. Meteorological conditions will continue to favor the transport of African dust.

Winds will blow from southern directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort, temporarily reaching up to 7 in the Ionian and 7–8 Beaufort in parts of the Aegean.

Temperatures will show a slight rise, mainly in western and southern regions. Highs will reach 15–17°C and locally 18°C in central and northern mainland areas, 18–19°C and locally up to 20°C in the Ionian and other mainland regions, and 20–21°C in the Cyclades, Crete, and the Dodecanese.
